The school year 2010-2011 brought new beginnings for soccer in Garbally college. This was the first time three teams would compete in the FAI schools league. Representing the school along with the first years were the U14 and Senior soccer squads.
Garbally College would like to thank to Ballinasloe Town F.C for the use of their fantastic facilities throughout the year.
1st Year Soccer
There was huge interest this year in this grade with 30 players taking to the field for training. The group were drawn in a tough group, solid performances against St. Marys and Colaiste Ioganid along with an impressive victory over Aloysius Athlone made sure of a Connacht quarter final against Athenry. Athenry proved a very strong side an edged us out of the competition. There were fine performances from a number of players throughout the league which will provide a good base for the years ahead.
Goal scorers were Cathal Shields, Colin Cotton, Eoin Galvin, Michael O’Neill

This was an excellent group of players which provided great performances this year. The team was captained by Mark Richardson and went through the group stages of the league unbeaten. Excellent victories over Castlebar, Belmullet and a draw against Aloysius brought us to a Connacht quarter final. Here Garbally came up against Oranmore and won 6-2. This was an excellent performance and showed that the Garbally players possessed quality in there side as well as goal scorers. In the semi-final we played St Gerard’s Castlebar, Garbally gave a fine performance but could not break down the Castlebar side and lost to the physically stronger side.
Excellent performances in defence by Jake Curley, Daniel Dunne, Joe Lynch, Jordan O Leary and Cathal Shields were bases of a solid campaign. A great attacking mid field with Ian Fletcher, Simon Keller, Mark Richardson, and strikers Conor Payne and Mahmoud Guimea provided plenty of pace and goals. These along with excellent reserve players will no doubt come back next year and go one better.

This was the first year Senior Soccer was played in the school. It was a very competitive league this year and despite several good performances Garbally failed to progress into the later stages of the competition. However it was a good step forward in the school creating a solid foothold in the senior soccer league. This year’s team was a very young and inexperienced side but will in no doubt become stronger as a result of their first campaign in the senior league. This coupled with the prospect of numerous younger talented players coming up through the ranks into the side will ensure we remain very competitive at this level.
