The junior football team began training early in the year with good numbers turning out for training. However our league campaign did not go to plan with losses to Oranmore and Castlerea. However we were always concentrating on the championship which took place after Christmas.
We met Oranmore in the quarter-final of the championship in February. Despite trailing with 10 minutes left to play our good training and our never say die attitude began to show. We kept our composure and took our points when they presented themselves. In the end we ran out winners on a score-line of 0-14 to 1-07.
In the semi-final in March we travelled to Ballyhaunis to take on Mayo side Rice College, Westport. Our young team put in a huge effort against a much physically stronger Rice College. We went in at half-time leading by one point. On the resumption we tore into Rice College from the throw in and increased our lead to 4 points. However the loss of our influential mid-fielder, Daire Curley, through injury gave Rice College dominance in the middle of the park and they began to claw back the lead and they overtook us in the last 5 minutes opening up a two point lead. In the dying moments we came agonisingly close to getting the goal that would have won us the game, however it was not meant to be.
Hopefully we can learn from this experience and take encouragement for senior college’s football next year as we have the makings of a good team. The players would like to thank our trainers, Pat Potter, Godfrey Gibbons, Aidan Dooley, Bryan Minton and John McHugh, who joined us after the February mid-term, for their dedication and excellent training. We would also like to thank Mr O’Brien for his great support of the team throughout the year.
